The pictures show Latvian women giving water to a column of German Wehrmacht soldiers, and Wehrmacht soldiers entering Riga. At the beginning of Operation Barbarossa, the Germans were hailed as liberators in large parts of Eastern Europe.
Little did they know...
Immediately after the establishment of German authority in July 1941, eliminations of the Jewish and Roma populations began.
Special campaigns killed over 90,000 Latvians during the German occupation.
